They debuted in the 1980s as a UC Santa Cruz party band, playing ironic covers of songs they didn’t really like, but soon discovered they could write their own songs equally lacking merit. Their style, defined musically by their inability to play jazz chords or escape the gravitational pull of the pentatonic scale, is anchored by the cuddly grizzly bear stage presence of singer John Carlstroem, who sings as if he actually believes he is “Hammered to the Wall of Love” and wants to get “C-c-c-c-closer to you.” The band, known to their double-digit legions of loyal fans simply as “The Chunx,” reunites every five to ten years when one of the members needs a new kidney. But this may be your last chance to catch them live for some time, as Carlstroem is moving to Maui, Hawaii to live out his fantasy of dressing as King Triton, partying with Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson, and conducting an undersea Tuba orchestra made up largely of porpoises and Monk Seals.🦭 <h2>JUDAS BUTLER</h2>— Judas Butler is a Brooklyn based band formed in the crucible of college critical theory classes. Introduced by a shared professor, they bonded instantly over a communal love for artists like Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney, and Bikini Kill. Already making music individually for years, they began writing and playing together in the spring of 2023. GLITTERFOX—The Portland band Glitterfox has released five singles in just six months under their new record label Kill Rock Stars, with two more singles arriving this spring. ROWAN KATZ—The woods stands at attention. The bark glistens underneath the sun’s soft gaze. The leaves capture droplets of sorrow on their skin, but that’s not what has your attention ⎯⎯ at first. Deep rustic burgundy crackles and pops, imprinting an image of strength and striking beauty. Rowan Katz‘s eyes waver, ever so slightly, a moment of uncertainty caught on film, and their skin is damaged but with a sweet complexion. They’re made of molecules that burn, gold and silvery pixie dust cast in between each tree. “I haven’t healed at all,” they whisper in wispy and weathered frowns. “Still Here” is not an end but a means to one. It’s the bookend of their debut extended play, a seven-track confessional of rawness scavenged from underneath their fingertips which show blood and bone and brokenness and dirt and gravel. She cuts the wounds back open, retelling the gruesome tale, “For a month, I could not sleep / I had nightmares of an unborn child / I was bursting at the seams, caught in a war fought between tame and wild…” Violet, as it’s appropriately titled, illustrates the very salt-of-the-earth mythos of a troubled soul whose life was nearly snuffed out at the hands of foam-mouthed, savage, beastly, barking dogs. They learn to slay their demons to better understand their own identity, their wants and needs, and what should come next in their life. ELIZABETH LUBIN—Elizabeth's songwriting is a catalyst for contemplation, her rhythms a rootsy homage to intimacy. There is a tenderness in this music that feels like the kin of your own heartbeat. The melodies are digging for the roots of the ancestral, seeking new growth and healing to replace where a stump beholden to a discouraged heart once stood. MAIIA—Maiia is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and producer who enjoys pulling in choral, pop, jazz, folk, and electronic influences. She is currently working on an album about grief that she hopes to release later this year, and aims to spread solace, comfort, and resonance through her lyrics and harmonies.

Phillip introduced Scott to Nels back in 1994 when they played Nels’ legendary New Music Monday series at the now defunct Alligator Lounge in Los Angeles. That meeting eventually led to the forming of The Nels Cline Singers in 2001. His recording and performing career — spanning jazz, rock, punk and experimental — is well into its fourth decade, with over 200 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. Cline has received many accolades including Rolling Stone anointing him as both one of 20 "new guitar gods" and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Beyond Wilco, Cline performs in a duo project with guitarist Julian Lage in addition to a quartet, The Nels Cline 4 (featuring Lage plus bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Tom Rainey), collaborates with his partner Yuka Honda as the duo CUP, performs as Stretch Woven with percussionist Scott Amendola, leads The Nels Cline Singers (featuring Amendola plus bassist Trevor Dunn and percussionist Cyro Baptista) and plays with Stained Radiance (an improvisational live project with performance painter Norton Wisdom). The Cosmic Psychos are (almost) an Australian punk rock institution who formed in Spring Plains, Victoria in 1982, spearheaded by founding member and bass player Ross Knight. To date, the band have released 10 studio albums since their self-titled debut (1987) and their influence has been global, with UK band The Prodigy sampling their music on 1997’s ‘The Fat of the Land’ LP and Nirvana producer Butch Vig proclaiming them an influence on both Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene of the 1990’s. In 2009, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam spoke candidly of the effect the band had on him growing up in Seattle. The band’s repetitive lyrics, fuzzed out guitar and wah-wah bass sound has remained unchanged over their 30 plus year career and continues to win over new audiences. A documentary by filmmaker Matt Weston, released in 2013, titled ‘Blokes You Can Trust’ featured a whose who of global indie tastemakers and music makers espousing the Cosmic Psycho’s legacy in Australian musical history. The self titled single ‘Zeke’ was then released on Scooch Pooch Records and was followed by the 1995 release ‘Super Sound Racing.’ ZEKE then hit the road again, unveiling a devastatingly high-octane live assault. The band was heralded as “Rock and Roll outlaws,” playing every conceivable venue that would have them. Based in Los Angeles, Edward describes Male Tears as “the result of a goth’s love affair with 1980’s new wave” and a pop experiment flirting with themes of morbidity, sexuality and self-destruction. The debut self-titled album was released in February, 2021 on Pacific Plaza Records. YAMA UBA—Yama Uba is a dark synth pop / post-punk project, featuring Akiko Sampson (vocals, bass, synth, programming) and Winter Zora (vocals, guitar and saxophone).  “Layering guitars and saxes over synths and drum machines, this Oakland duo’s darkwave is as melodically potent as it is texturally rich.” -Bandcamp  Yama Uba have shared stages with Pink Turns Blue, Kaelan Mikla, Buzz Kull, Light Asylum, and livestream bills with A Place to Bury Strangers, Twin Tribes, and She Past Away. ivy room presentsWEDNESDAY JUNE 5TH—<h2>THE AVENGERS TESS &amp; THE DETAILS &amp; SPECIAL GUESTS</h2>—Doors 7:00pm / Show 8:00pm$20 Advance / $24 Day of Show —IVY ROOM860 San Pablo Ave, Albany • 21+ THE AVENGERS—In the late '70s, The Avengers burst out of San Francisco, establishing themselves as one of the US's preeminent punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms, and adolescent venom, the group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Their live shows were legendary, playing up and down the West Coast and even blowing Sex Pistols off the stage at the latter's final performance. Byron Coley would reflect that in 1977; "The Avengers were by far the coolest and youngest sounding. They roared without irony, as though this were indeed Year Zero (and, for a moment, it was), with history being overwritten by the new. The honesty of their belief was carried by their sound. And it was convincing!" The Avengers' self-titled LP is often referred to as "The Pink Album" for its magenta-hued cover design. Frontwoman Penelope Houston's iconic voice and razor-sharp lyrics resonate on anthems "We Are The One" and "The American In Me," while penetrating ballads like "Corpus Christi" reveal a truly out-of-body euphony. The Pink Album remains The Avengers' definitive statement – collecting their classic Dangerhouse EP, sessions recorded with the Pistols' Steve Jones and a half-dozen revelatory demos. While much has been written about The Avengers in the past three decades, rock critic Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, "The word I always come back to is mystical, and that remains almost theirs alone." TESS AND THE DETAILS—Tess &amp; The Details are a punk rock band from San Francisco, California signed to Double Helix Records in the U.S. and Engineer Records in the U.K. and E.U. Their debut album “Runaway,” released 11.14.23, was recorded at ModernTone Studios in Lafayette CA by producer Jacob Light. It was listed as Dying Scene’s “Best Good Old Fashioned Punk Rock Record” of the year and earned 4/5 stars from New Noise Magazine. The band's mission is to use its platform via lyric messages and social channels to address vital topics such as mental health, gender equality, and the promotion of optimism. A strong emphasis is placed on fostering connections with their audience. The name "Details" stems from the band's meticulous approach to their craft, extending from lyrics and sound production to merch design, stage outfits, and set lists during live performances—each element is intentional.

CARDBOARD PEOPLE—Cardboard People is a Bay Area alt-indie-soul-artpop band founded by singer Yunoka Berry and Berkeley-based producer Jim Greer (Galactic, Foster the People, Geographer) , who came together during the pandemic as an outlet for their love of genre-bending in the structure of pop music. Since forming, the group has played all over the Bay Area and is rapidly gaining a buzz for their innovative sound and irresistible performances, landing slots at Hiero Day, Haight Street Music Festival, and many more, all while releasing one full length album, two EPS, and multiple singles. The band has collaborated with local legends Del The Funkee Homosapien and Domino from Hieroglyphics, Angelo Moore (Fishbone), and their sound runs the gamut from laid back indie-soul with tracks like “Devour" and “Lovecraft(Mind Games)” to hyped up bangers like the 80’s tinged "Faster and "Built Like A Barbie", as well as laying down powerful, gospel influenced tracks such as “And Still I Rise” and “Bondage”... Cardboard People are set to release a slew of singles leading up to album II for Fall 2024. POCKET FULL OF CRUMBS—Pocket Full of Crumbs is a 3 piece band based out of San Francisco. As they reminded in their great 1996 epistolary anthem “To the Enemies of Political Rock,” not singing about causes is a political statement, of acceptance of the status quo. In “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” America, Team Dresch did not have the luxury of complacency if they wanted to sing about the most basic of lyrical themes: Love. For four young women who love other women, choosing whether to sing their hearts out “can feel like a choice between pleasure and existence,” as Jody Bleyle evocatively expressed in “Political Rock.” Or, as they sang a little less politely in the same song: “Just own it you little slacker fuck.” Listening to Team Dresch’s 1990s albums and singles two decades later, I’m struck by the way in which they’ve gained, not lost, power. Combining the brazenness of Riot Grrrl with the angst dirge of grunge, Team Dresch didn’t just raise the stakes of queercore: They created two near-perfect albums about longing, freedom, and belonging over guitar riffs as epic and intense as Bleyle and Kaia Wilson’s poetic couplets. In the hands of Janis Ian or k.d. lang, or Tegan and Sara, songs like “She’s Crushing My Mind” and “Yes I am Too But Who Am I Really?” might have been ballads. Inspired by punk and metal, Team Dresch played them as bone crushers.Beginning with their self-naming, Team Dresch celebrated singularity and camaraderie. Guitarist and bassist Donna Dresch was the indie-rock legend (Screaming Trees, Dinosaur Jr., Fifth Column, etc.) under whose ax they united, but they carried the ball down the field together, passing lines, leads and instruments back and forth. They were all experienced musicians – Jody drummed for Hazel, Kaia had been in Adickdid, Marcéo Martinez in Calamity Jane – and brought a level of serious musicianship to the primitivism of Olympia’s DIY scene. On their 1995 debut, Personal Best (named after the movie starring Mariel Hemingway), they raged against the Christian right and small towns, then kissed their girlfriends on the mouth. Dresch, Bleyle, and Wilson played ferocious, intricate riffs fast while Martinez hit the drums hard. Their lyrics cited the Smiths and Sinead O’Connor, patron saints of sorrow and suffering. To paraphrase their own song, they were amazing; their words saved us. Melissa York replaced Martinez on Captain My Captain, pounding the skins even harder – and adding a level of NYC showmanship to the quintessentially Northwestern, T-shirted live act. “Uncle Phranc” kicked out the jams this time. The band was finding and creating community, elevating and becoming dykons. Already Team Dresch commanded a level of assurance and confidence, staying true to the underground’s autonomous spirit and dispensing useful advice, such as “Don’t Try Suicide.” They released their records on indie labels, mostly ones they ran themselves, Chainsaw and Candyass. “Remember who you are, Make up who you are,” they roared over the noise of busted closets. Punk rock would never be the same. Team Dresch broke up suddenly, its members going off in singles and pairs to other projects: The Butchies, the Vegas Beat. They reunited in 2004 and have played occasionally since, because music this honest never gets old. 2019 marks the first time they are flirting with the idea of being an active band again, look for more from Team Dresch as the year unfurls! OCEANATOR—After a handful of cassette releases, including the Lows EP in 2018, Brooklyn’s Oceanator released their proper debut album, Things I Never Said, in 2020. The album was a clear portrayal of the immense and growing talents of songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Elise Okusami and was immediately praised in the likes of Noisey, Under The Radar, Stereogum, and SPIN, who featured the band on their “20 Most Interesting New Artists of 2020” list. On the band’s sophomore album, Nothing’s Ever Fine, Okusami channels her energetic and adventurous writing style she’s become synonymous with and delivers a batch of riff-heavy songs that sound bigger and bolder than anything she’s done before. Co-produced by Bartees Strange, the album features tracks like “Bad Brain Daze,” which finds Okusami enlisting friend and collaborator Jeff Rosenstock for a bouncy saxophone solo, while “Stuck” features heavy distortion and sludgy riffs. Okusami is no stranger to various genres and playing styles. In addition to her numerous US tours with Oceanator sharing bills with the likes of Jeff Rosenstock, Camp Cope, Pedro The Lion and others, she has previously spent time as a touring member of Bachelor (featuring members of Palehound and Jay Som), Vagabon, and Petal. THE HOMOBILES—The Homobiles — "the Bay's mainstay queer party punk supergroup" (East Bay Express) — combine a raw and unapologetic punk sound, an anti-fascist and anti-racist spirit, and a touch of irreverent fun. Their current lineup features Lynn Breedlove (ex-Tribe 8, he/him) on lead vocals, Fureigh (Middle-Aged Queers, ex-The Shondes, they/them) on guitar and vocals, and powerhouse Blair Switch (she/her) on bass. The Homobiles have been featured at the New York Live Arts Festival (curated by Mx. Justin Vivian Bond), opened for queercore legends like Pansy Division, and been the subjects of a documentary ("Spacecars and Babes," filmed in Austin during their spring 2017 tour). The anti-fascist music video for their song “Homo Safe” has screened at film festivals around the world. ALLISON WOLFE—Born an identical twin in Memphis, Tennessee, Allison Wolfe was raised in an all-female household by a lesbian feminist mother who started the first women’s health clinic in Olympia, Washington. She co-founded a punk fanzine Girl Germs, an all-girl band Bratmobile, and third-wave feminist punk movement riot grrrl. Allison also sang in the bands Cold Cold Hearts, Deep Lust, Partyline, Cool Moms, Sex Stains, Ex-Stains, Cliquey Bitches (Scorpio Scorpio) and Magic Witch Cookbox, along with initiating the non-profit music festival Ladyfest in 1999. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she teaches music journalism at UCLA, hosts and co-produces a podcast “I’m in the Band,” does freelance music journalism, public speaking, teaches ESL/EFL, DJ-ing and sings again in Bratmobile. A University of Southern California Annenberg Fellow, Allison completed a masters in specialized journalism in the arts with a focus on audio storytelling. She is also gradually working on a riot grrrl book and podcast.

Cuntstomer Servixxx has an upcoming debut album “No Refunds," which is dedicated to queer workers who have seen their indie theatre jobs replaced by WeWork offices. The music and lyrical poetry that comprise these songs are personal, memoir-based feelings and experiences that stem from being misunderstood as genderqueer, while putting fake butter onto a large popcorn. The music is ethereal, cathartic, pop, musical theatre, cabaret, and punk. Jessica has directed all of the music videos, which are shocking and one-take, conveying images like getting a tattoo and shaving off a full head of hair. Over the past two decades, the Seattle-raised, Los Angeles-based artist has persistently honed their songwriting and toured, opening for acts like Noah Gunderson and David Bazan. This dedication comes out entirely in their songs, which are so timeless, confident, and inviting they can only come from someone who’s devoted their whole life to their craft. They have shared the stage many times over with the likes of Slipknot, AFI, Serj Tankian, Avenged Sevenfold, and Rise Against, just to name a few. They have headlined some of the biggest and best festivals around the world (Germany’s “With Full Force”, Belgium’s “Grozerock”, U.S.‘s “Warped Tour” and Colombia’s “Rock Al Parque”). By currently playing more than a hundred concerts a year around the world, Surfer Joe is among the most active artists in modern surf music. In addition to participating in the most important surf-related events around the world, including festivals in the USA and all over Europe, and being mentioned or interviewed in books and movies about the genre, he has released 7 full length recordings, 5 EPs and 2 7 inch singles. His recordings have also appeared on over 9 compilation releases. Surfer Joe represents the true, authentic side of surf music, carrying on the sound and energy legacy of the original early 60s California bands, while introducing his own unique style. His compositions are very melodic, easily recognizable, memorable and accessible to any kind of audience. Many of the songs feel so familiar upon first listen that they are commonly referred to as "instant classics". On stage, Surfer Joe likes to tell stories and anecdotes, and keeps the interaction with the audience personal and funny. He has plenty of material to draw from, as he has personally performed and interacted with many of the legends of the genre at several of the most important original locations and venues. (Uniting All Frequencies or Under As Fuck) is the connective tissue between the Afro-Punk-Industrial aesthetic of The Beatnigs and the Afro-Futurist-Jazz stylings of Broun Fellinis for drummer, Kevin Carnes. Throughout the early 90's, Kevin assembled several ensembles under the UAF banner, genre bending Punk, Dance, Pop, DJing and Improv, to perform throughout the Bay Area.</li><li>Black Quarterback is a live looping trio featuring David Boyce (sax and electronics), Kevin Carnes (drums and electronics) and Michael Cavaseno (guitar and electronics). Enlightenment through analog digital designs, the next level of sound imagination evolving, third eye indigo vision, channeled by Osiris Black Edgar aka David Boyce (Broun Fellinis). </li><li>6 Roses is David Boyce, tenor/soprano saxes/efx and Michael Cavaseno, guitars/efx) conjure songs from across the spectrum of music, from Jazz to RnB to World and re-interpreting them in psychedelic, ambient, mesmerizing soundscapes that transcend the conventional ways of music making. With unprecedented speed and precision, Bad Brains took the Washington, DC music scene by storm and quickly became the most influential band in American punk history, breaking down cultural barriers and creating emotionally charged music centered on the message of maintaining a positive mental attitude (PMA). This concept of PMA continues to inspire HR’s fans. Early in his career, HR became interested in reggae and the Rastafarian movement. These pursuits transformed him, and he began to focus more on the spiritual nature of reggae rather than the fast lifestyle of the punk scene. In 1984, HR formed his reggae-rock band Human Rights, which has performed and recorded in various incarnations for more than three decades. Currently, HR performs with Philadelphia musicians Ezekiel Zagar (original McRad) and Josh Freshy as HR &amp; Human Rights. The band has a refined yet organic energy that hasn’t been felt since the early days of Human Rights.In addition to working on a new solo album with Human Rights, HR has been in the studio with Ty Dolla $ign and Vic Mensa, once again making music history.

Mark your calendars and join us at the Ivy Room on August 24th at 7 PM as we celebrate 15 years of music and memories with The Thirstbusters. It's been a long time coming, but the wait is finally over. TANSY—Tansy is the brainchild of Will Feinberg and McKenna Alicia. Feinberg, a native of Detroit, and Alicia, a native of Oakland, met in New Orleans in 2017 where they began playing together in the city's music scene. After a period of contributing to each other's own original projects, they felt themselves being pulled together by their collaboration. McKenna and Will then decided to write and record a debut album, Full Bloom, which they released in April 2020. Since releasing Full Bloom, Tansy has released three singles between 2021-2022, as well as an EP, Deep End, in 2023. They are currently working on recording their next album, set to start releasing in 2025. Though they have lived 2,000 miles apart since 2019, they have still continuously written and recorded music together, always trying to further explore and progress their sound, as well as playing shows in both LA and the Bay Area. Influenced by the music of Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper Experiment, Moonchild, and Norah Jones; Tansy synthesizes the warmth of a classic RnB sound with the bold harmonic and melodic statements of today's jazz. The end result is a nuanced sound that appeals to a wide variety of listeners while leading the way forward in contemporary vocal jazz.

In 2017 Church wrote and recorded Haunt's debutrelease, the extended play Luminous Eyes, with Daniel Wilson playing drums for the recording. Itwas first released digitally, as an independent release, but it later received physical releases fromthe Shadow Kingdom Records label. In 2018, Church wrote and recorded one single for Haunt, Ghosts. Later that same year, Hauntreleased their first full-length studio album, Burst into Flame. Daniel Wilson returned to play drumsfor the album, this time as an official band member. Joining Church and Wilson for the album wereMatthew Wilhoit on bass and John Tucker on guitar. Both Wilson and Tucker would stay aspermanent members, but Wilhoit would be replaced by Taylor Hollman on following releases.In 2019, Haunt released their second EP, (Mosaic Vision) their second studio album, (If Icarus CouldFly) and two split albums. (A Fool's Paradise / On the Streets Again and Sea of Dreams / TheCrystal Temple). The following year they released their third and fourth studio albums, titled MindFreeze and Flashback respectively, as well as the Burst into Demos compilation.” Haunt has been featured on the cover of Decibel magazine (February 2020), featured in RollingStone magazine and has made numerous “top” lists, such as Rolling Stone’s top 20 metalalbums of 2018 (with Haunt at number 12). The band has toured with Municipal Waste, andToxic Holocaust as well as fellow metal travelers such as Hell Fire and Idle Hands. Haunt’sSpotify plays for 2020 reached 1 million streams. SAVAGE MASTER—One of the most exciting and electrifying bands in today’s occult heavy metal scene, during the first six years, SAVAGE MASTER swiftly built an impressive canon of work over the course of two cult albums, one EP, one single, and especially their over-the-top live shows. Since releasing his debut album, Resolutions, in 2011, the Philadelphia-born songwriter has poured his whole heart, soul and life into his music. That’s no different on Drive It Like It’s Stolen, his sixth full-length. Its 10 songs overflow with Hause’s trademark urgency and passion, shimmering with a truth that reflects the harsh realities of life in this day and age, as well the intermittent jolts of joy that punctuate it. After all, his songs have always detailed his own personal traumas and triumphs within the setting of an unforgiving capitalist backdrop, tethering those personal experiences to ineluctable external forces. 2013’s second album, Devour, for example, was a response to his divorce from his first wife, while 2019’s Kick saw him tackle hope, depression, global warming and a crumbling American democracy with the news that he was to become a father. Most recently, on 2021’s Blood Harmony, Hause wrote and sang about the positive impact of having twins, and of the joy and excitement of being able to be at home with them for the first couple of years of the pandemic.

Once I committed to that, all these little miracles started happening.” ‘Forever Just Beyond,’ Barzelay’s stunning new album under the Clem Snide moniker, may just be the most miraculous of them all. Produced by Scott Avett, the record is a work of exquisite beauty and profound questioning, a reckoning with faith and reality that rushes headlong into the unknown and the unknowable. Today, the band shares the video for&nbsp;"Wicked World", directed by&nbsp;Chris Carlone&nbsp;and featuring LA punk icon,&nbsp;Alice Bag. Watch it&nbsp;here.&nbsp;Kid and Alice will also be part of the&nbsp;LA Intersections Festival at The Broad&nbsp;Museum&nbsp;in a special, one-off performance on March 30th. “We've gone from a four piece to a three piece,”&nbsp;continues Kid, whose unique guitar style has been at the center of some of the most forward-thinking bands in punk and garage:&nbsp;The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and&nbsp;Knoxville Girls,&nbsp;to name a handful. “Because&nbsp;Mark Cisneros&nbsp;(ex-The Make Up) is playing guitar, sometimes we have songs with two guitars. And then sometimes, he plays bass on a bass six [i.e. — the electric bass version of the mariachi instrument, the bajo sexto]. So, that is a new development. We lost a member and decided to try to do it as a three piece — more space, you know?” Ron Miller&nbsp;remains on drums, percussion and vocals. “I'm not sure if living in the desert is making me want more space in music or not,” laughs Kid, a Tucson resident for a few years now. “Maybe I’m turning into a desert stoner rocker. But I'm not a stoner, so that's not happening.” No, the former Brian Tristan is most decidedly not unleashing a Kyuss tribute album. But you hear the desert all over&nbsp;That Delicious Vice,&nbsp;beginning with opening instrumental&nbsp;“East Of East,” its Duane Eddy/Rowland S. Howard guitar twanging through some malicious reverb. You feel it in the slide guitar-drenched theme from an imaginary western, “Silver For My Sister,”&nbsp;which echoes the pioneering Los Angeles blues punk band Kid formed with&nbsp;Jeffrey Lee&nbsp;Pierce, The Gun Club. There’s also such unique pieces as the acid/garage cumbia title track, translated into Spanish at least for its name, “Ese Vicio Delicioso.”&nbsp;As he tells the tale of his musical journey over the Pink Monkey Birds’ cowbell-thumping Latinate rhythms, Kid’s thickly distorted guitar groans and screams with feedback, likely a conscious sonic homage to Jimi Hendrix, namechecked in the lyrics. “Mark came up with some great Spanish guitar things,"&nbsp;Kid enthuses.&nbsp;“We were working with cinematic sound a lot — creating a mood, creating a picture and creating a feeling. We actually like to expand, spread our wings each time a little more and not do the same old thing, and not just be the thinking man's garage rock band. But the album’s major hallmark has to be its extended collaboration with Alice Bag, the face of and voice of early LA punk titans&nbsp;The Bags. How and why these two took this long to unite creatively is a dense mystery, considering both graduated with honors from early Hollywood punk palace The Masque, and their photos had to have stared at one another from opposite pages of a few issues of&nbsp;Slash&nbsp;or&nbsp;fLiPSiDe. “Yeah, we were around that ground zero, that tight circle of friends,”&nbsp;chuckles Kid, “But there was a lot of cliquiness going on, even though the scene was so small. Everyone knew each other, but I was more with The Screamers and she was more with The Bags and the punk thing. You know, I was more arty farty!” “We go back a long time,”&nbsp;enthuses Alice. “When I was doing my book tour, Kid called me and I hadn't heard from him in ages! And he's like, ‘You're coming to DC! If you need me for anything, I'm gonna make some noise with you —&nbsp; I'm in!’ “It always amazes me how deep those early friendships go. You can not speak to somebody for years and years, but if you have punk rock in common, you're my sister or brother forever.&nbsp; So he came out and he played with me at one of my early readings in DC. And then, every now and then I'd see Pink Monkey Birds, but just randomly. Because he was living on the East Coast and I was living on the West Coast, we didn't see each other very often and fell out of touch again.” Next thing either party knows, they’re both In The Red labelmates, with the release of Alice’s third solo LP,&nbsp;Sister Dynamite.&nbsp;Following that, the producers of the Peacock comedy television series&nbsp;The Resort&nbsp;reached out to label head&nbsp;Larry Hardy, to inquire if either Kid or Alice would be interested in composing a Spanish-language song for the show. “It was actually Alice who said,&nbsp;‘Well, why don't you just get us together and we’ll do it?’” says Kid. “And they went for it. So we wrote a cheesy lounge act song, which is of course much better than any cheesy lounge act.” “We recorded it,” adds Alice.&nbsp; “Then we did these cameos on this show, playing our song. They flew us out to Puerto Rico for a few days. It was just a really fun experience. It's really fun getting to hang out with Kid, and the process of writing a song with him was very enjoyable, even though I was living in Mexico City and he was in Tucson by then — we were still working remotely. “But we just clicked. I’d send him a recording, and then he’d add to it. and send something back. We both were very open to each person's own brand of quirkiness.” This led to&nbsp;“Wicked World,”&nbsp;a full-on Kid Congo/Alice Bag duet that’s&nbsp;That Delicious Vice’s second track and major fulcrum. Over rat-a-tat “Big Bad John” drums, a blast of fuzz bass, and Kid’s siren-like slide guitar, the co-composers recount in tandem the tale of a child&nbsp;“born into trouble from a devil seed/Every fork in the road led her here.”&nbsp;It’s a short drive from there through a poor childhood and bad decisions to turning tricks and seeking kicks, amid an atmosphere heady with the scent of sex. The action stops, and Alice chants, “One two three four five six seven — you’re going to Hell, and I’M GOING TO HEAVEN!!”&nbsp;It’s a pulp paperback reincarnated as primal rock ‘n’ roll. I write fiction—questionable fiction at that. This is my third attempt after being told by our manager to do and then redo a bio—I think I am being kind in not pointing out the difference between biography and autobiography. I certainly gleaned an insight into…self promotion…so this is my final attempt, dont ask again and dont try and edit and improve it to: Appeal to a wider audience. That is not us. I will start—and I wish I could end—by saying, Thirty years, hundreds of songs. Wouldn’t it be nice to end right here? But, the internet said I needed to address other ‘fascinating points of interest’. What genre are we? I don’t want to be shoehorned anymore, I hope that we have made our own. We helped create The Denver Sound and we continue to experiment and reinvent what we are flattered to be a part of. I am proud that we have taken total control of…everything, and continue to release music and books on our own label SCACUNINCORPORATED. SCAC is releasing the second section of Kinnery Of Lupercalia: Buell Legion. Only SCAC is able to faithfully represent the Buells and their hopes and hates, humors and despairs. I usually dont listen to our albums after we record them, however I might listen to this again. It finally captures the perfect balance between our studio and live sound. Andrew and Dwight have graduated into what I would call, Advanced Placement Recording. Everyone has found their place in SCAC and it shows on this album. George—Emile Cessna’s brother—has joined SCAC on baritone bass and now forms a formidable rhythm section with longtime drummer Andrew—I guess I should mention everyone here. Though she would never say it, Rebecca—my girl— pushes the pedal steel and keyboard into new territory. I now see Dwight cited as a major influence for both banjo and guitar players and he cements those accolades on the Buell Legion. Slim’s voice is honed and better than ever… and Myself, blah blah blah… A person should not have to qualify a statement with, Honestly…but, honestly, SCAC is a family and yet, We Want More Of You, everyone is invited and welcome. I like standing at the merch booth and seeing someone from our 90’s shows now bringing their children to see what this life is all about. It is interesting to think that people would pay to see us jump about on stage, actually give money to read and listen to what we are doing. I don’t know why I have been chosen to speak for everyone here, but I do know that everyone will say, We are grateful and appreciate every time we are allowed to entertain you. Their originality challenges and often rivals, with their distinctly blunt and radical views, some of the most iconic bands of the past-and-present punk scene often littered with meaningless personal topical babble. (Just ask the die-hard fans.) M.D.C. undoubtedly influenced many bands of today, evident in many modern anti-government and anti-oppression oriented groups, as early American Punk folklore blazoned its course through the past 35 years. M.D.C. was on the cover of the FIRST issue of Maximum Rock’n’Roll, which also includes a band interview. They have had major articles in Playboy, Spin, Sounds, and interviews far too numerous to count in local papers and fanzines across the globe. As an integral part of early American Punk folklore, it is not surprising to find references to M.D.C. in the annals of punk history and beyond the boundaries of mainstream music culture–their honorable mention in the alternative duo They Might Be Giants’ song “Rhythm Section Want Ad” and the “Millions of Dead Cops” album ranking #7 on Kurt Cobain’s all-time favorite list are two interesting examples. M.D.C. forged strong friendships and allies through their years of touring such as The Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Ian McKay of Minor Threat, Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman of Rancid, Green Day, and Dave Grohl, to name a few. M.D.C. is active in a number of good causes, recently speaking against the jailing of anarchist Chris Plummer, and more. They have organized and participated in countless benefits for grassroots movements, from the Native American Big Mountain to Food Not Bombs, and have continually campaigned with their best efforts in the furtherance of a better world. As of 2014, Millions of Dead Cops, a.k.a. M.D.C., is comprised of two original members, Dave Dictor on vocals and Ron “x-con ron” Posner on guitar, along with “Mad Mike” Smith (Brother Spud, No Red Flags) on bass and Jesse Cobb (Valid Effort, Embrace The Kill) on drums. Having just toured the U.S. extensively and a stint in Australia and New Zealand, M.D.C. has just signed with Beer City Skateboards and Records. Many remastered reissues will be coming out on vinyl, CD, and as digital downloads. Also a full line of softwoods as well as some surprises are all in the works. M.D.C. has also been working on its newest full-length release with about two dozen new songs to choose from, so the future ahead looks bright for one of the Pioneers of Hardcore Punk Rock. WHITE TRASH DEBUTANTES—Punk rock has always had its socio-political agitators as well as bands that simply wanted to entertain; White Trash Debutantes are a perfect example of the latter. Formed in San Francisco in 1989, the female-led (though not entirely female) outfit hasn't inundated listeners with serious political or social messages -- its specialty has been wild, rowdy, trashy, decadent, over-the-top fun. Debutantes, who are led by singer Ginger Coyote, have always favored an amusing, tongue-in-cheek approach; their material is as humorous as it is in-your-face. The Californians love to poke fun at pop culture, and occasionally, their songs have employed kinky S&amp;M/dominatrix imagery (including "Crack of the Whip" and "Whipping Boy"), but always in a humorous and ironic fashion. In 1991, Faith No More bassist Bill Gould produced their EP, San Francisco, for Alternative Tentacles. The 1990s also found Debutantes (who once invited the controversial Olympic skater Tonya Harding to join the band) recording albums or singles for various indie labels, including Teen Rebel, Desperate Attempt, Beer City, and 206 (which, in 1996, released their full-length album It's Raw...But You Live for It). After playing the Bay Area scene for over a decade, Debutantes moved to Los Angeles in 2000. Since its formation in 1989, the band has had its share of personnel changes; one former member is bassist Gwynne Kahn, who has also been with the Pandoras. In 2000, Debutantes' part-female, part-male lineup included Coyote, Tonia Bodley, and Rhiannon Pollock on vocals, Jake Goldman on guitar, Dan Humes on bass, and Johny Sosa on drums. 2001 found Debutantes recording seven songs for the Orange Peal release What's It All About?, a split CD that also contains seven songs by fellow punk combo Cell Block 5.~ Alex Henderson, Rovi CLASS. OF 77—CLASS OF ’77 is a band that has been to the rodeo, and rocked it! It is a tribute to the Punk Explosion of 1977 that reinvented and saved Rock music. The term Punk was coined about the music that exploded that year and blew away the cobwebs of the early Seventies’ scene. Class of ’77 honors the bands and the music that drove that cultural explosion. The music was created for “Outcasts and Artists,” and we adhere to that model. We celebrate the music of bands like: The Clash, The Dead Boys, The Damned, The Ramones, Early Blondie, Generation X, Johnny Thunders, and much more… People have responded to our live performance from the get-go; singing along, pogoing, revisiting a time of anarchy and energy. We interpret these songs in a way that is fresh and sonic, yet remains true to the spirit of its time. Our collective stage presence is energetic and fun. You will leave humming the tunes. Their live show is a wild dance party with a great deal of improvisation that remains grounded in indie style songwriting. There is nothing quite like it on the scene. Banshee Tree has shared the stage with artists including Devotchka, Keller Williams, Dirtwire and Moontricks. They released their debut album in August 2021 and are currently working on their second. But despite the deluge of bullshit, we know that occasional nuggets of ugly and raw authenticity will claw their way to the surface for the hardcore punk faithful. And folks, we have just such a nugget in Deadly Struggle: 8 tracks of pummeling aural turbulence on a 12" slab for those who desire reality over cosplay. Building off the shockwaves of 2020’s Condemnation, Public Acid’s sound—a skewed, arty amalgamation of bludgeoning hardcore, frantic, riff- soaked d-beat, harsh noise, and underground metal—has only grown more focused and furious. There’s the virtuosic rhythm section, possessing an inhuman combination of lightness of touch and neanderthal power; the blinding, riffs-inside-of-riffs guitar style; the density of sound, massively heavy and pock-marked with kaleidoscopic fuzz; the maniacal vocals, inventive in both their technique and their rhythmic cadences; and, of course, the deadly mid-paced parts. Deadly Struggle reminds us that while hardcore punk will never die, those who cheapen it absolutely will. -Beach Impediment records <h2> KINETIC ORBITAL STRIKE (K.O.S.)</h2>(<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kineticorbitalstrike.bandcamp.com/">bandcamp</a>)—Power Trip drummer Chris Ulsh is already in bands like Mammoth Grinder, Innumerable Forms, and Devil Master. So why not tack one more on to the list? Ulsh has now launched his furious new punk project Kinetic Orbital Strike alongside members of Dark Thoughts. The name might be a bit of a mouthful, especially around 2:00 am, but this Philadelphia band (with members of the mighty POLLEN or IMPALERS, among many other bands) unleashes that familiar brand of brutal, distorted, noisy discore that we have all grown to love (right?). They sound like the almighty FRAMTID teamed up with COLLAPSE SOCIETY and FEROCIOUS X in order to borrow DISCLOSE’s gears and flair in order to inject more DISCHARGE worship into their Japanese käng tornado, with a spoonful of HORRENDOUS, too. The drummer is on bloody fire on this recording, I have rarely heard such manic rolls and the insane level of intensity takes one’s breath away. They manage to keep that urgent, raw vibe and still sound punishingly heavy (my very angry neighbour banging on the door would not disagree). Angry hardcore at its best, and the self-released version (Phobia Records will take care of the European one) has an ANTISECT-inspired wheat logo on the back which checks yet another one of my romantic boxes. Top-notch hardcore. <h2>NUCLER BLUD</h2>(<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://nuclerblud.bandcamp.com/">bandcamp</a>)—Blistering buzzsaw punk that goes straight for the jugular. More raw than dumpstered T-bone, this slab of hardcore is dripping with vigor and fury. Fans of the noisier side of Japanese hardcore should take note, as I’m picking up on strong influences from CONFUSE, KURO, and FRAMTID. While the tempos vary throughout the six cuts on this tape, things never slow down too much, and none of the songs crack the two-minute mark. I appreciate the unceremonious approach NUCLER BLUD has utilized. No build-ups, intros, outros, or really anything extraneous. Just laser-focused on pumping out the damaging frequencies, and it’s over before you know it. There’s also quite the interesting pedigree going on as well, with former members of NO STATIK, IN/HUMANITY, JUD JUD (!), and END OF THE CENTURY PARTY comprising this beast of a band. To Live a Lie doesn’t tend to fuck around, and this tape is no exception. NUCLER BLUD is a band to keep an eye on. - Maximum Rock n Roll

Lisa Light and Scott Blonde met in Oakland, CA, in 2002 via Blonde's manager, whom Light was dating. Light ditched the manager for Blonde and joined his band, Applesaucer, before the year was out. The chemistry between the two was evidently too much for the band to handle, however, and the two were purportedly kicked out of Applesaucer for making out during band practice. Unabashed, the two musicians dubbed themselves the Lovemakers (taken from a Japanese porn flick called The Weird Lovemakers) and struck out on their own. Light and Blonde recruited a keyboardist, Jason Proctor, and got to work on a homemade, self-titled EP. Released in 2003, the disc became quite popular in the Oakland area, selling out at local record stores and earning the group an avid following at its live shows. Their EP began to get local radio play, studio reps started showing up at the band's gigs, and soon enough the group was snatched up by Interscope. Things were going well for the band, but rock stardom put a strain on Light and Blonde's relationship; they broke up only weeks before they were scheduled to record their debut album. Undaunted, the group headed into the studio and recorded Times of Romance, a sweaty, glittery, disco-laden affair that hit stores in late summer 2005. Chief among the album's offerings was a single called "Shake That Ass," an indie re-imagining of 50 Cent's "Shake That Ass Girl." The group recruited a drummer, Ken Hard (formerly of Oasis), and moved to a new label, Fuzz, Inc., over the course of the next two years. In addition to writing and performing his original music, Paul continues performing and recording bass and guitar with many inspiring musicians and songwriters in the Bay Area, including three-time Grammy Award winner Fantastic Negrito, flamenco guitar virtuoso Jason McGuire, prolific songwriters Heather Normandale and Rachel Lark, Cumbia powerhouse La Misa Negra, and swamp rock impresario Tracorum. I'd seen Bobbye Hall play congas, which changed my musical trajectory from singer/songwriter, to vocalist/percussionist, which was much more hirable position. I got to see the world in many bands over the next 40 or so years and eat regularly. My first tour was with Narada Michael Walden opening for the Brother's Johnson and Rufus with Chaka Kahn. Chaka, a drummer herself, began to insist that I sit in with Rufus as a kind of stealth move so she could play timbales when she wanted to. From there I toured with George Benson for the next 10 years, in addition to stints with Dr. John, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins. I recorded when off the road with Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Todd Rundgren. I ended up in the Tonight Show Band with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2010. The last 8 years I’ve toured and recorded with Mavis Staples, was featured in the HBO documentary Mavis! and on two of her records. I am a progressive political evangelist and when I’m not arguing with people on Facebook, my political views wend themselves into my song lyrics, whether with my Alt Rock/Funk band Skip The Needle or my solo acoustic performances where they reside alongside accounts of my disastrous dating life.
